Award ceremony of the 35th edition of the Bourstad competition

On Tuesday, May 24, 2022 the awards ceremony for the 35th edition of the Bourstad competition was held.

Under the honorary presidency of Mr. Éric Jacob, Superintendent of Client Assistance and Distribution Management, Autorité des marchés financiers, beginners as well as more experienced investors had the opportunity to manage a virtual portfolio of $200,000 and to invest this amount by choosing securities from a selection of real securities listed on stock markets during the Bourstad 2022 stock market simulation contest, which was held from February 14 to April 14, 2022.

At the ceremony, the contest jury, chaired by Ms. Fanie Dubuc, Senior Enforcement Counsel at the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), awarded prizes totalling more than $35,000 to the participants who have excelled in the three components of the competition: financial performance, portfolio management and responsible investing.

 

Paul Bourget

With an MBA in finance and information systems (McGill) and a BAA in marketing (HEC Montréal), Paul Bourget is the creator of the Bourstad Challenge and has been its pedagogical director since its launch in 1987. He has had a career in college teaching while taking on various coordination and research mandates. Between 2010 and 2014, he piloted a financial education project at Collège de Rosemont that meets the needs of the adult population. He is continuing his teaching career in the Continuing Education Department at Collège de Rosemont. He joined CIRANO in 2015. He is responsible for two financial education projects: the Bourstad simulations and the FinÉcoLab educational games.

Nathalie De Marcellis-Warin

Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin joined CIRANO in 2000 as a postdoctoral researcher and was appointed President and CEO in 2016, after serving as Vice-President from 2008 to 2016. Since 2011, she has led the CIRANO Barometer project on risk perception in Quebec, which annually collects data on Quebecers’ concerns regarding 47 major societal issues. She is also Head of the CIRANO Research Pole on the Socioeconomic Impacts of Digital Intelligence and Principal Investigator of the Innovation and Digital Transformation research theme.

She is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, where she also serves as Academic Director of PolyFinances. In addition, she is a Visiting Scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an Associate Researcher at the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO).

She holds a PhD in Management Science (specializing in risk management and insurance) from the École normale supérieure de Cachan. Her research focuses on risk management and decision-making in contexts of risk and uncertainty, as well as the design and evaluation of public policies. Her work combines economic analysis, cost-benefit analysis, survey data analysis, and more recently, large-scale unstructured data analytics.

In 2008, she founded the RISQH network, a knowledge-sharing and awareness network dedicated to risk management, patient safety, and quality of care in healthcare institutions. She contributed to the development of the Montreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence.

She serves as Scientific Director of the Measurement Tools, Monitoring and Surveys Division at the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technologies (OBVIA). She is also co-founder of the International Francophone Network on Scientific Advice (RFICS).

At CIRANO, she leads and contributes to several large-scale research initiatives, notably the creation of an economic digital twin of the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes region (GVCdtLab), developed in collaboration with the federal government.

She has published numerous scientific articles, several books, and more than 40 reports for government and other organizations. She has delivered over one hundred conferences and is regularly invited to speak in the media.

Fanie Dubuc

Fanie Dubuc is the Chair of the Bourstad 2022 judging panel

Ms. Dubuc is a senior enforcement councel at the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC). Graduate from Sherbrook University and holder of the Quebec Bar accreditation, Ms. Dubuc was responsible for legal and regulatory affairs at the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés and then Counsel to the Court Remedies Directorate at the Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) before joining IIROC in 2015.

Éric Jacob

Mr. Jacob is the honorary president of the 2022 Bourstad Challenge.

He was appointed Superintendent, Client Services and Distribution Oversight, Autorité des marchés financiers, in May 2021. With the assistance of over 150 employees, Mr. Jacob supervises the activities of representatives and firms in the insurance of persons, damage insurance, claims adjustment and financial planning sectors. He also administers the eligibility requirements related to and rules governing distribution activities, while overseeing the issuance of representative certificates and the registration of firms.
