Marie Connolly and Catherine Haeck, both Professors at ESG UQAM and CIRANO Fellows published an article in the Canadian Journal of Economics that shows a decline in social mobility in Canada.
In Intergenerational income mobility trends in Canada, the authors document the rise of the intergenerational transmission of income using newly updated administrative Canadian tax data for children born between the early 1960s and the mid-1980s. They show that children whose parents were in the bottom income quintile have become less likely to exit the bottom quintile once in adulthood and less likely to transition into the middle class.
This article is related to several studies carried out at CIRANO by the authors.
