Delphine Bosson-Rieutort and Erin Strumpf publish an article in BMC Geriatrics

Delphine Bosson-Rieutort, CIRANO Researcher and Professor at École de santé publique de l’Université de Montréal (ESPUM) recently published an article in the scientific journal BMC Geriatrics. Based on a CIRANO study, this article is co-signed by Erin Strumpf, CIRANO Fellow and Professor at McGill University, in collaboration with Juliette Duc, PhD. candidate at ESPUM, Jean-Frédéric Boulianne and Sébastien Barbat-Artigas. The study examines healthcare and social care utilization and cost during the last year of life of people who died in Quebec at the age of 66 and over, according to their cause of death.

Deaths related to cancer and organ failure are associated with heavy use of acute care, while frailty leads to greater use of long-term care and social services. In many cases, the costs of social services, particularly long-term care accommodation, exceed those of medical care.

In a context where people aged 65 and over will represent nearly a quarter of Quebec’s population by 2031, these findings underscore the importance of adapting the organization of end-of-life care to patients’ actual trajectories.

CIRANO congratulates the authors for this publication and for their contribution to advancing knowledge in health policy.
