Economic Outlooks 2026: CIRANO Highlights the Analyses of Matthieu Arseneau and Dalibor Stevanovic

As part of the recent launch event of the Bourstad 2026 competition, held at CIRANO, participants attended a high-level conference focused on economic outlooks for 2026, offering in-depth analysis of current macroeconomic challenges.

The conference opened with a presentation by Matthieu Arseneau, Deputy Chief Economist at the National Bank of Canada, who delivered a structured overview of current economic trends and the main scenarios likely to shape the Canadian economy in 2026. His analysis helped frame expectations regarding growth, inflation, and monetary policy in an uncertain economic environment.

The conference continued with a presentation by Dalibor Stevanovic, Professor at ESG UQAM, Co-Holder of the Chair in Macroeconomics and Forecasting, as well as Principal Researcher and Head of the CIRANO Pole on Québec Economic Modelling. He presented the Chair’s work and analytical tools aimed at better understanding macroeconomic dynamics in Canada and Québec.

This presentation echoed his most recent CIRANO report, Macroeconomic Shocks and Public Finances in Canada and Québec, which examines the impact of various macroeconomic shocks on economic activity and public finances, highlighting differentiated effects across types of shocks and regions. The findings provide valuable insights to inform budgetary planning in an uncertain macroeconomic context.
