The Department of Economics at the Université de Montréal is proud to announce a major contribution from two of its alumni, Étienne Dubuc and Stéfane Marion. Recognized for the excellence of their careers, they now hold strategic leadership positions within one of Canada’s largest financial institutions.

In a generous gesture reflecting their strong commitment to the next generation, each donor has contributed $50,000 to support the Claude-Montmarquette Scholarship.
Étienne Dubuc and Stéfane Marion
Established in 2021, this scholarship honours the memory of Claude Montmarquette, a leading figure in Quebec economics, professor emeritus at the Université de Montréal, and co-founder of the CIRANO. A prolific researcher and a key contributor to public policy analysis, he left a lasting mark on both academia and policy-making.
The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in economics or in mathematics and economics who plan to pursue graduate studies (master’s or PhD) in economics and demonstrate a strong interest in public policy.
This major contribution not only exceeds the initial fundraising objective of the scholarship but also ensures its long-term sustainability. It builds on the momentum established since its creation, which has already supported promising students, including the first award recipient in 2023 and subsequent recipients recognized at CIRANO’s annual researchers’ meeting.
Through their commitment, Étienne Dubuc and Stéfane Marion are making a meaningful contribution to training the next generation of economists and strengthening the ties between academia and decision-makers. The Department of Economics and CIRANO warmly thank them for their exemplary support, which will have a lasting impact on the academic community and the advancement of economic research.
